Robert Y. George: Net fishing on notice

Net fishing on notice

I applaud the three Republican N.C. state senators, Harry Brown of Jacksonville, Thom Goolsby of Wilmington and Bill Rabon of Southport, for sponsoring Senate Bill 1085 to make illegal the use of industrial-scale seine-net fishing of menhaden and Atlantic tread herring in coastal waters of North Carolina.

I am sure that Gov. Pat McCrory and the Republican-led General Assembly will make this bill into law in 2013.

Our fisheries, not only along the coast but also in our rivers and offshore areas within U.S Exclusive Economic Zone, must be protected from overfishing in order to restore these ecosystems.
