— Police charged a local man Friday with an early-morning burglary and sexual assault on Fidelity Street.

Francisco Javier Diaz, 33, of 501 N.C. 54, Apt. Q-1, was charged with attempted first-degree rape, first-degree burglary and sexual battery, police spokesman Lt. Chris Atack reported.

Officers responded to a 911 call around 4:17 a.m. Friday in the 100 block of Fidelity Street after a man broke into a residence and sexually assaulted a 25-year-old woman, Atack reported. They searched the area and found Diaz, he said.

Atack said the woman, who they do not think is a UNC student, was not alone in her residence at the time. Her roommate was asleep in another bedroom when the man came in through a back door that may or may not have been secure, Atack said. There was no sign of forced entry, and the victim woke up to find the man in her bedroom, he said.

Diaz was taken to the Orange County Jail under a $100,000 bail.
