Sharp-shooting Georgia Southern upsets Davidson, 70-57

— C.J. Reed had 16 points and five assists to lead sharp-shooting Georgia Southern in a 70-57 upset victory over Davidson at Hanner Fieldhouse Monday night for its first Southern Conference win of the season.

Reed was 7-of-15 shooting and 2 of 4 from 3-point range as the Eagles (7-10, 1-3) made 53.1 percent (26 of 49) from the floor and 5 of 10 from deep. Eric Ferguson added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 on 3-point attempts, and Marvin Baynham had 10. The Eagles’ win ends an 11-game losing streak against the Wildcats.

Georgia Southern took control with an 11-1 run midway through the second half.

The Eagles outscored the Wildcats 26-10 in the paint and 23-11 off the bench.

Davidson (9-7, 4-1) had been in sole possession of first in the Southern Conference’s South division, but fell into a tie with the College of Charleston.

The Wildcats shot 36.4 percent (20 of 55) including just 9-of-30 (30 percent) in the second half.

Davidson’s Chris Czerapowicz scored 13 points and added six rebounds, hitting 3-of-7 3-pointers. Tyler Kalinoski chipped in with 11 points and Jake Cohen had 10. Nik Cochran had six points and six of the team’s 12 assists.

Georgia Southern started the game hitting 10 of its first 13 shots from the floor including all three 3-pointers during that stretch to open a 25-13 lead. The Wildcats made a run themselves to close the gap to 35-31 at halftime which included 3-pointers by Clint Mann and Kalinoski.

The Eagles outrebounded the Wildcats 34-30 and the teams combined to turn the ball over just 10 times.

Davidson cut the lead to a one-possession game several times in the second half but couldn’t take a lead. The Wildcats next host division rival The Citadel Thursday evening at Belk Arena. The game starts at 7 p.m.
