2013 realities

I recently wrote to Sen. Kay Hagan asking her to support tougher gun laws. Her response was, “Doing that will require a common-sense debate on a comprehensive approach that examines all relevant issues, including access to firearms, mental healthcare and the prevalence of violence in video games and media. As always, it is important that we not unnecessarily infringe on the legitimate Second Amendment rights of responsible gun owners.”

As I consider this response, I’d like to remind Hagan and all staunch supporters of the Second Amendment that the Second Amendment was written in 1791, when the guns the Constitution guaranteed the right to bear were only single-shot, muzzle-loading weapons. It’s long past time for the Second Amendment to be changed.

The Constitution is not so holy that it shouldn’t be changed to recognize the reality of the times we are living.
