Barry H. Beith: Note the ‘well’

Note the ‘well’

While I support the Second Amendment and the right of people to own guns legally, I wonder how many of the NRA leadership and members (or other fanatics who desperately want to own assault weapons with extended clips and magazines) have read the full but brief wording of the amendment?

It states that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The NRA and most hard-core gun advocates don’t seem to want to acknowledge, discuss or debate the meaning of “well-regulated.” It is no wonder since it probably would support regulations and restrictions to gun ownership that make sense.

As a lobbyist for gun manufacturers, distributors and retailers, the NRA doesn’t care about responsibility, ownership or a “well-regulated militia.” It is paid big bucks to preserve and grow gun sales.
