No criminal intent seen in bonfire injuries

Published: January 22, 2013

MOUNT PLEASANT, N.C. – No criminal activity is suspected in the bonfire explosion that injured three people on Saturday in Cabarrus County.

The Cabarrus County Emergency Management Director tells NBC Charlotte that at this point, there is no evidence that a crime has been committed – that there was no intent to injure anyone.

Officials said something was found in the bottom of the barrel that likely led to the explosion, but aren't saying what it is.

The Chapel Hill Burn Center says Kendall Bolton, Nathan Honeycutt and Chris Holland were injured when a barrel inside the heart of the bonfire exploded on Saturday. All three are receiving treatment at the burn center.

The property owners are facing code and ordinance violations for not having the proper permits to burn. The property where the fire took place is located in the 3700 block of Barrier Store Road.

Club Fitness in Concord is accepting donations to help the victims' families cover medical bills and expenses.
