Cary gets started on new roundabout Wednesday

From staff reportsJanuary 22, 2013

— Two complicated intersections should get a little easier to navigate as the town prepares to begin construction on a set of new roundabouts.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday morning to kick off the project, which should be complete by summer.

The roundabouts, the first for the downtown area, will ease traffic through two Y-shaped intersections where Chatham Street meets East Durham Road and Old Apex Road.

Town officials say the intersections are being reconfigured to make them easier and safer to use.

“They’ll be an entry feature in the downtown, and they’ll serve as traffic-calming devices,” said town engineer Kyle Hubert. “You’ll have to slow down to come through the roundabouts.”

The groundbreaking will begin at 10 a.m., and will cause some traffic issues.

A section of West Chatham Road will be closed from 9 to 11 a.m. Drivers will be rerouted onto Old Apex Road and should expect some minor delays.
