The best country picks, Jan. 25

Swift Creek band.

  • Other highlights: • The Raleigh-based programming organization, PineCone, hosts a fundraiser tonight at Raleigh Little Theatre. The old-time country band Bloomsbury will perform. Also tonight, the South Carolina Broadcasters bring their old-time trio to the Depot in Hillsborough. And on Sunday, the Sweetback Sisters visit the Rooster’s Wife in Aberdeen; 10 String Symphony will open.

The Swift Creek band is one of the latest to sprout from the Triangle’s fertile musical soil. The band’s debut CD, “Winner Winner Chicken Dinner,” is an appealing blend of progressive bluegrass and folk songs. Recorded at Chapel Hill’s Rubber Room studio, the album features original material (including the tasty culinary title track) and rarely performed covers from the Steeldrivers, the Decemberists and others. Swift Creek will perform tunes from the album in a free show Friday at Quail Ridge Books. The show begins at 7:30.
