David F. Colvard: Diversify tech

January 24, 2013

Diversify tech

Recently, our AT&T U-verse voice service went down, then within an hour the Internet service went down. Fortunately, we still had voice service through our Verizon cell phones, and my wife was able to use the free Internet at a local coffee shop to keep working on her company’s network. We still had cable television through Time Warner.

As I told the very kind and apologetic and perplexed AT&T technical support person, this outage (Jan. 24 news story) is a good reason not to have all your (eggs) services in one company’s (basket) bundle. Anyone still convinced that (online) Electronic Health Records are going to solve all our health care cost problems needs to think again.
