Hope from Pope
I take my hat off to Art Pope. As a Democrat, I was naturally disgusted that Republicans are about to take this state in directions I don’t care to go.
One of the directions I most hated was the tea party favorite: the elimination of the progressive income tax. The idea has been supported by state legislators Phil Berger and Bob Rucho, who would switch revenues primarily to the sales tax – on food, clothes, anything that shifts the “burden” away from the rich.
Mr. Pope, bless his heart, has given the poor some hope with his warning against switching the burden to the less fortunate. I do all right, financially, and am glad to share the wealth with my less fortunate citizens. While I may disagree with some of Art Pope’s beliefs, he has my wholehearted support in a statement that may bear some political risk.
