Duke, UNC ranked high in lacrosse

The Duke men’s lacrosse team will begin the 2013 season ranked No. 4 and No. 6 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media and USILA coaches polls, respectively. The Blue Devils finished last season ranked fourth. North Carolina’s men’s lacrosse team, which begins its season on Feb. 8 against Air Force, debuted at fourth and seventh, respectively, in the USILA coaches and Inside Lacrosse media polls.


Shaw: Shaw’s Ronika Ransford and Jacques Curtis were named this week’s CIAA Newcomer and Coach of the Week, respectively.

Ransford led Shaw in scoring with 26 points off the bench in the Bears’ comeback victory over Virginia Union. Ransford also had 16 points, six rebounds and five assists in Shaw’s win against cross-town rival Saint Augustine’s.

Curtis coached Shaw to three straight victories last week and their ninth straight win overall. The Bears are 3-0 in Southern Division play, 17-2 overall and 8-1 in the CIAA.

Saint Augustine’s: Freshman guard Regime McCombs was named CIAA women’s basketball rookie of the week.

A 5-foot-6 sharpshooter from Greenville, S.C., McCombs averaged 18 points in two games last week. She scored 16 points in a win against Johnson C. Smith on Wednesday, and 20 points in a loss to Shaw on Saturday.

Track and Field

Saint Augustine’s: Burkheart Ellis Jr. (freshman, Raleigh) and the men’s 4x400 relay team were winners at the Penn State National Invitational indoor track and field meet this past weekend.

Ellis won the men’s 400 meter dash in 48.71 seconds. He finished ahead of teammate Elhadji Mbow, who claimed second place in 49.05.

Ellis also helped the Falcons win the JoePa Invitational men’s 4x400 meter relay.

He, along with Josh Edmonds, James Quarles and Dane Hyatt finished in 3:09.46 to defeat Pittsburgh and Hampton.


UNC: The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its preseason top 35 poll Monday, and North Carolina checks in at No. 2. UNC was picked as the ACC Coastal Division favorite last week in a vote of the league’s 12 head coaches.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack were picked ninth in the NCBWA Division I preseason poll and were named as both the overall ACC favorite and the team to beat in the Atlantic Division.

Wake Forest: Erik Supplee has been named director of baseball operations at Wake Forest, coach Tom Walter announced.

Supplee comes to Wake Forest after serving two seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Lynchburg College.


Campbell: The Campbell softball team was selected to finish third in the Big South preseason coaches’ poll as announced by the conference office.

Coastal Carolina (78) was honored as the preseason favorite with seven first-place votes, while Charleston Southern (68) earned two first-place nods to finish second.


Saint Augustine’s: The Saint Augustine’s women’s bowling team turned in a strong performance at the second CIAA Southern Division meet over the weekend, finishing second behind Fayetteville State.
