A News 14 Carolina reporter was recovering in a Charlotte hospital on Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while covering storm-related power outages in Dilworth.

Reporter Caroline Vandergriff was in stable condition at Carolinas Medical Center-Main. The station said Vandergriff was “awake, alert, upbeat and surprised at the attention this accident has generated.”

“All of us at News 14 Carolina and Time Warner Cable have her in our thoughts and prayers,” News 14 staff said in a news story on Thursday. “We wish Caroline a speedy recovery and will be with her every step of the way. We’ll let you know how she’s doing.”

Vandergriff joined the station in December.

The wreck occurred about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and East Morehead Street in Charlotte, one of several spots across the city that lost power as heavy winds and rain that swept through the region.

News 14 said Vandergriff was shooting video of downed power lines when she was struck.

A witness told the Observer that Vandergriff was standing on the sidewalk with her video camera just before 9:30 p.m. when the two cars crashed in the intersection. One of the cars slid across the sidewalk where she was filming, briefly sending Vandergriff airborne, the witness said.

Medic responded and transported her to CMC-Main.
