The GOP promise
I read with dismay of the Republican plan to end unemployment benefits July 1. Surely they realize that when they end unemployment benefits or lay off state workers that these actions affect more than individuals. This money is not spent in Raleigh, but is spent by people all over the state to pay for the grocer, the gas station, the rent and mortgage, the car dealership and the local food market. It reduces the incomes of everyone and has the effect of prolonging the recession.
This party came to power largely through its promise to create jobs, productivity and a better way of life. Their present actions reflect a way of thinking that may appear penny-wise but is clearly dollar-foolish. They should be encouraged to remember their promise to create prosperity and jobs.
