Voting is a right
The writer of the Jan. 28 letter in support of voter IDs fell victim to the fallacy of “false equivalence,” a fallacy that is very common among the voter ID crowd.
While the argument that one must have a government-issued ID for using a credit card, driving a car or obtaining a fishing license is true, he failed to recognize that those three activities are special privileges. It is expected that not all citizens will avail themselves of such privileges. Nor are such privileges constitutionally guaranteed.
Voting is a right held by U.S. adult citizens, and access to voting for all our citizens must be protected. Let’s please not diminish the importance of this right by comparing it with something as mundane as obtaining a fishing license!
