RALEIGH — Ravenscroft coach Kevin Billerman has seen his young basketball team mature this season en route to winning the programs seventh consecutive conference championship.
The Ravens withstood a late North Raleigh Christian surge Tuesday to win 49-46 and remain undefeated in conference play. The Ravens jumped out to a 10-3 lead after one quarter and seemed poised to hold an edge the entire game, but a relentless Knights team slowly chipped away in the second half.
North Raleigh pulled even with the Ravens with just under seven minutes remaining on a Phillip Haynes shot. The Knights then took the lead with just over three minutes to play on a Tyler Seymour fast-break lay-in.
Haynes and Seymour led North Raleigh (11-10, 2-4) with 13 and 12 points, respectively, but sophomore David Reynolds put the Ravens back ahead with less than a minute to go, and the home team held on. Reynolds finished with 14 points for the Ravens. Marcus Bryan led all scorers with 15 and Chris Corchiani added 11.
Ravenscroft (17-9, 7-0) won for the 15th time in 17 games and will close its regular season Thursday by hosting Cary Academy.
