Ode to Martinez
I enjoyed the Feb. 1 column by Rick Martinez (“A long overdue look at relevance”) in support of Gov. Pat McCrory’s suggestion that the UNC system focus more on practical and job-related majors. He also pointed out the rather snobbish view by the liberal arts (aka “fuzzy studies”) community that we need them to provide “critical thinking and problem-solving skills” in the workplace. Oh, engineers and scientists don’t think critically or solve problems?
Look, if an engineer makes a mistake, a plane crashes. When a liberal arts major makes a mistake, all you get is a bad poem.
