Two 3-year-olds were confirmed for Fair Grounds' $400,000 Risen Star Stakes with a third colt listed as probable. The 1 1/16-mile stakes is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 23.
Trainer Al Stall Jr. confirmed Friday morning that Sunbean, owned by Brittlyn Stable, will start in the Risen Star. The 3-year-old broke his maiden on New Year's Eve at Fair Grounds in the $106,000 Louisiana Futurity and followed with a win in an optional claiming race for accredited Louisiana-breds.
Also confirming for the stakes was trainer Dallas Stewart who will start Golden Soul for owner Charles Fipke. The colt was second to Oxbow in the Lecomte Stakes at Fair Grounds.
"The pace in the Lecomte was pretty slow, but (Golden Soul) was finishing good. As the distances get longer, then I think he'll do better," Stewart noted.
Meanwhile, Stall said that Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider's Departing is a likely candidate for the Risen Star.
"Departing will run next in either the Risen Star or the Rebel (March 16 at Oaklawn Park)," said Stall. "He's two-for-two right here on this track so that might help us when we're making a definite decision."
Departing won for the first time on Dec. 22 at six-furlongs and then registered a 4 1/2-length win at a mile and 70-yards on Feb. 1.
