Dwight Powell produced a double-double of 22 points and 10 boards as the Stanford Cardinal held off the Arizona State Sun Devils for a 62-50 victory in a Pac-12 Conference matchup at Wells Fargo Arena.
Josh Huestis added a double-double of his own for Stanford (15-9, 6-5 Pac-12) with 13 points and 15 rebounds. John Gage chipped in 11 points as the Cardinal won for the fourth time in five outings.
Carrick Felix paced Arizona State (18-6, 7-4) with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jahii Carson tallied 15 points but committed five turnovers while Jonathan Gilling chimed in with 13 points off the pine. The loss was the second in three games for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State got off to a slow start and shot just 34.3 percent from the field while going 1-of-5 at the charity stripe in the opening 20 minutes. The Cardinal took a 36-28 lead into the break by hitting 7-of-11 from beyond the arc in the first half.
The Sun Devils continued to struggle and made only 31.1 percent of their attempts from the floor after halftime. They managed to narrow the deficit by attempting 11 more field goals and holding Stanford to 38.1 percent shooting, but the hosts came up short when Bo Barnes's 3-point attempt for the tie in the closing seconds was unsuccessful.
Despite the loss, Arizona State outscored the visitors, 22-14, in the paint and also, 13-2, in second chance points.
