Im writing in response to the Jan. 31 article Man thrice deported charged in Raleigh crash: The articles placement and lack of broader context serve to distort the debate on immigration policy and its impact on North Carolina residents of all backgrounds.
Prominently highlighting this one individuals experience as though it were indicative of the totality of federal immigration policy challenges is misleading. One undocumented immigrants experience is no more a reflection of the broader immigrant community than a single U.S. citizen with multiple arrests could be considered a reflection of all residents in North Carolina.
As elected leaders in Washington and North Carolina have recognized, it is time to move forward into a serious debate on the effect of immigration policy on families throughout North Carolina and the country.
I hope that The N&O will approach coverage of these issues from a more balanced perspective in the future.
