The Mooresville woman accused of stabbing a man to death Sunday was the 2012-13 Teacher of the Year at Lakeshore Middle School.
Dawn Bridget Kavanaugh, 42, taught sixth-grade social studies at the middle school, and last May was recognized at the schools Teacher of the Year, according to the school website and a letter sent by human resources Executive Director Ethan Todd to the Iredell-Statesville School Board.
Kavanaugh was charged in the stabbing death of 43-year-old Ronald Ketchum after police were called to a home northwest of Mooresville around 6 p.m. Sunday. Officers said they arrived to find Ketchum suffering from a stab wound.
He was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he died.
Kavanaugh was in the Iredell County jail Tuesday night and had appeared before a judge Monday. The relationship between Kavanaugh and Ketchum was unclear Tuesday, as was information about measures Lakeshore Middle School officials were taking in the aftermath of Kavanaughs arrest.
Attempts to reach Mooresville police and school officials were unsuccessful.
