ER visits expensive

N.C. Senate President Pro Tempore Phil Berger wrote that the Medicaid program is too expensive (“The missing Medicaid facts” Feb. 14).

In the words of a friend of mine I would say, “Compared to what?” Anyone who goes to an emergency room sees a whole lot of people who look as though they shouldn’t be there. While the “we” really have no right to judge the “they,” I do suspect that many people are using emergency rooms for treatment of every kind of medical problem simply because they do not have – and cannot afford – medical insurance. Wouldn’t you? Now how expensive is that, Mr. Berger?
