Shakin It Up, making his first start of the year, found room between horses down the stretch to win Sunday's $150,000 San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park. The time for seven-furlongs was 1:22.48 on a fast track.
Half of the six horse field was made up of trainer Bob Baffert horses, including Shakin It Up. Owned by Mike Pegram, Shakin It Up was the 2-1 second pick behind 9-5 favorite and stablemate Belvin. War Academy, Baffert's third horse, was 6-1 with Treasury Bill at 4-1.
Setting the pace was Belvin and Caballo Del Cielo. Racing last was Treasury Bill with Shakin It Up and jockey David Flores sitting just off the leaders. The field was fairly tight entering the far turn in the Santa Anita Derby prep race.
On the final turn Caballo Del Cielo had a short lead with Treasury Bill gaining from the outside and Shakin It Up moving off the rail. At the top of the stretch, Shakin It Up found space between horses to move to the lead.
Shakin It Up had the lead inside the furlong pole and went on to register a length victory over the closing Treasury Bill. Caballo Del Cielo finished third followed by War Academy, Mudflats and Belvin.
Shakin It Up added $90,000 to his bankroll. The colt picked up his second win in four starts for $139,600. He began his career at Santa Anita on Oct. 7 with a second in a maiden claiming race.
He found the wire first on Oct. 27 at Santa Anita and finished third in the Hollywood Prevue at Hollywood Park on Nov. 22.
Shakin It Up paid $6.40, $3.80 and $2.80. Treasury Bill returned $5.00 and $3.80, and Caballo Del Cielo paid $3.60 to show.
