Undefeated 3-year-old Violence begins his trek to the Kentucky Derby with Saturday's $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The colt will take on 10 challengers in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.
Owned by Black Rock Thoroughbreds, Violence will be ridden by Javier Castellano from post 3. He will be the first of two Todd Pletcher trained 3- year-olds Saturday to start in Kentucky Derby preps. Palace Malice will be running in the Rise Star Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Violence is perfect in three career starts, including wins in the Nashua at Aqueduct and the CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park. He begins his 2013 season with $543,000.
"Everything looks good," Pletcher said in advance of the race.
Coming in from California is Breeders' Cup Juvenile runner-up He's Had Enough. Owned, trained and ridden by the connections of last year's Kentucky Derby champ I'll Have Another, He's Had Enough will break from post 9 with Mario Gutierrez riding for J. Paul Reddam and trainer Doug O'Neill.
He's Had Enough was fifth to Violence in the CashCall and came up third in last month's Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita. Winner of just one of six starts and $472,000, the gray colt is still seeking his first stakes victory.
Falling Sky, winner of the Sam F. Davis Stakes, will start from post 10 for trainer John Terranova II with Jose Espinoza again in the saddle.
"He's just doing great. He's won over the track here. I think coming back in three weeks, if anything, could help him. He seems to thrive on work," said Terranova. "We thought it would be a good spot to put him in since he came out of the Tampa race absolutely fantastic."
Owned by Newtown Anner Stud, James Covello and Joseph Bulger, Falling Sky won the Davis at Tampa Bay Downs to begin the year after taking an optional claiming race in December.
The Pennsylvania-bred colt has three wins in four starts for $164,800.
Here is the full field in post position order for the Fountain of Youth: Orb, John Velazquez; Joshua's Comprise, Edgar Prado; Violence, Javier Castellano; Majestic Hussar, Luis Saez; Elmutahid, Joe Bravo; Cerro, Joe Rocco Jr.; Sky Captain, Patrick Husbands; Speak Logistics, Joel Rosario; He's Had Enough, Mario Gutierrez; Falling Sky, Jose Espinoza and Sr. Quisqueyano, Carlos Olivero.
Part of the "Road to the Kentucky Derby" series, winning the Fountain of Youth will be worth 50 points.
