James George: Handouts don’t help

Handouts don’t help

In a Feb. 15 letter “Age-old rhetoric,” a writer concerned about the North Carolina reduction in unemployment compensation, states that Republicans care about money whereas Democrats care about people.

I find this amusing as illustrated by our federal Democrat-controlled government!

The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever, to 47 million people.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, tells us “Please do not feed the animals.” The stated reason for the policy is because the animals grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.

I think there is a lesson here.
