UnitedHealthcare adding 500 jobs in Greensboro

News & RecordFebruary 20, 2013

— UnitedHealthcare announced Tuesday that it will hire about 500 new employees at its local office this year and another 100 at other offices across the state.

The new jobs will give the health insurance company about 3,500 employees in Greensboro and a total of about 4,800 employees in North Carolina.

“North Carolina and the city and county are great places to invest,” Garland Scott, chief executive officer of the company’s Carolinas group, said in an interview Monday.

UnitedHealthcare now has about 3,000 employees at its Greensboro office, its headquarters for operations in North Carolina and South Carolina.

The Greensboro office is home to a call center, claims processing and administrative support. It handles some local clients, such as Cone Health, VF Corp., Lorillard, the city of Greensboro and Guilford County. It also works with some of its parent company’s national clients, including AT&T, LabCorp, Bank of America, Time Warner Cable and Duke Energy.

UnitedHealthcare hired 537 new workers in North Carolina in 2012, most of them for the Greensboro office. The company also has offices in Cary, Charlotte, Concord and Wilmington.

This year, UnitedHealthcare plans to hire another 573 employees statewide.

Most of the new local jobs will be workers to handle calls and claims because business continues to grow.

Scott said its number of North Carolina customers has grown by about 5 percent a year during the three years he has been CEO. UnitedHealthcare has close to 900,000 customers statewide.

About 125 of the new local hires will be registered nurses and nurse practitioners for UnitedHealthcare’s clinical business.

Some of the clinical employees will be assigned to HouseCalls, a UnitedHealthcare program to be introduced in North Carolina this year. Under this program, clinical workers will visit chronically ill Medicare patients at home and help manage their care by, among other things, checking their health, scheduling doctor visits and making sure their prescriptions are filled.

Salaries for clinical jobs will be as much as $92,000 per year.

Customer service representatives will be paid $40,000 to $70,000 based on experience and the specific job. Lower-level administrative jobs will pay from $33,000 to $40,000 per year.

The average Guilford County wage is about $42,000 per year.

UnitedHealthcare did not seek governmental incentives.

UnitedHealthcare is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, which is based in Minnetonka, Minn., a suburb of Minneapolis.

UnitedHealth Group is the nation’s largest health insurer, with 80 million customers and about 130,000 employees worldwide.
