DURHAM - The State Highway Patrol trooper who was shot Monday evening during a routine traffic stop was released from Duke Hospital Thursday, according to patrol spokesman First Sgt. Jeff Gordon.
Michael Potts, 42, was hit in the face, his right shoulder and both hands shortly after approaching the window of the black Nissan Altima on U.S. 70.
Mikel Brady II, 23, of Vermont, was arrested Tuesday after an overnight manhunt and charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
The 911 caller who witnessed the shooting reported Potts glanced at the road, turned his head and was shot, the caller then told the dispatcher that the Altima sped off, according to the recordings. Despite the wounds, Potts was able to get back into his car and report a description of his assailant and the car he was driving.
Potts underwent surgery to repair damage to his face, but is expected to make a full recovery. He is at home resting for the time being while he still recovers from his injuries, Gordon said.
Brady is being held on a $10.5 million bond, $8 million for the assault charge and $2.5 million for a fugitive charge from Vermont, according to the Durham County Sheriffs Office.
Bradys girlfriend, Lindsey Smith, 21, of Durham, has been charged with accessory after the fact to the assault charges and felony harboring an escapee. Her bail is set at $1.5 million.
Smith is seven-months pregnant. When it comes time for her to deliver her child, she will be transferred to the necessary facilities with an armed guard and will return to the jail once she is released from the hospital.
If she requires additional medical treatment that cannot be handled by the jail, she will likely be transported to the N.C. Correctional Institution for Women, according to the sheriffs department.
