John Payne: Payback will hurt

Payback will hurt

As one of those “lazy” unemployed, the proposed drastic cuts to unemployment benefits will have a major lifestyle impact. I agree with fiscal responsibility and accept the cut in benefits but sense that my Republican brethren in Raleigh do not want a second-term majority.

The changes will be devastating for many who are making every effort to replace their lost income – and likely to be fuel for a burn down of Republican power at the next election. The cuts could be fuel for much bigger burn downs, too, because this will cause crash landings for many.

Lawmakers should have worked for emergency landings of a softer sort and, should the governor sign the bill, voters will surely remind them of this fact later.
