GOP dishonors women
It’s strange. With all the problems facing our state in the aftermath of the Great Recession, the Republicans in our legislature can find the time to field a bill that would make it a felony for a woman to expose her chest in public. A felony, with all that implies – possible prison time, loss of rights and a record that’ll likely haunt the woman for the rest of her life – for a nonviolent act that may be nothing more than a youthful prank.
Bobby Jindal has urged Republicans to stop being “the stupid party,” but evidently that message hasn’t reached North Carolina yet. I suppose the next step is to mandate public floggings for failing to wear a head scarf and a veil.
I sometimes hear Republicans wondering why they are losing women’s votes, more and more every election, and how they can reverse this trend. Passing laws targeting them isn’t likely to help.
