Jim Seitzer: Twain the prophet

Twain the prophet

“No man’s life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session,” is a quotation generally attributed to Mark Twain, and one that certainly applies to the present N.C. legislature.

Imagine giving up three years of 100 percent federal Medicare coverage while denying healthcare for 500,000 fellow citizens, limiting unemployment benefits and the instant spending that flow from these and sponsoring voter registration laws that single out the poor and the old.

In the cases of the Medicaid and unemployment curtailments, North Carolina is foreclosing the use of federal funds that are being paid for by my tax dollars, and I resent the short-sighted action that denies the use of these funds by our citizens while we finance more forward-thinking states that participate. Fortunately, we have a fairly short election cycle.
