Mary Privott Ray

February 23, 2013

Mary Privott Ray, 91, of Lillington passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at WakeMed Raleigh.

She was born on May 24, 1921 in Edenton to the late Charles Daniel and Mary Harrell Privott. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles C. Ray, Sr.; 2 sons, Charles C. Ray, Jr., Mike Ray and daughter –in-law, Sheila Gilchrist Ray.

Mary was loved by many and a role model to all. Her inner strength was only equaled by her grace, beauty and kindness. Mary unconditionally loved her family… children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and their spouses alike. Mary loved each member of her family for their uniqueness and always helped them to reach their full potential. As a teacher, Mary dedicated 38 years of her life to educating 5th and 6th graders at Boone Trail School. Each year, Mary read “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett and shared a love of this story with them. During this time, she taught approximately 1000 students and instilled in them a love of learning and the importance of being a life long learner. Mary exemplified this trait the best by returning to East Carolina University to obtain her Masters of Education in her mid fifties. In addition to being a wonderful teacher, Mary was a committed member of her church. She was an Elder, Sunday School teacher and Presbyterian Women’s Circle member. Mary’s faith in God always sustained her when she needed it the most. Mary was a dedicated servant of God in everything she did.

A Funeral service will be conducted 3:00 P.M. Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Leaflet Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Saturday, February 23, 2013 at O’Quinn Peebles Funeral Home.
