— A Chapel Hill junior who was the son of a member of the UNC Board of Governors died late Friday in his off-campus home.

Stedman English Gage of Wilmington was the son of Hannah Gage, a former chairwoman of the Board of Governors. He was also a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Chancellor Holden Thorp issued a statement saying that Chapel Hill police are investigating the death but foul play is not suspected.

A statement issued on behalf of his family read: "This is a devastating tragedy and our family is handling the situation as best we can. We are heartbroken. We ask for your compassion and respect, for our privacy and that of our son."

Peter Blumberg, head of the Interfraternity Council, released a statement Saturday: “The IFC is certainly shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of not only a UNC student, but a member of the Greek community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the brothers of Phi Delta Theta and the Gage family.”

Counseling resources were being made available over the weekend, according to Thorp
