Since 1999, when three spectators died at Charlotte Motor Speedway, at least 12 people have been killed while watching races at oval tracks in the U.S.

May 1999: Eight fans were injured and three were killed when a tire launched over a Charlotte Motor Speedway fence during an Indy Racing League event.

August 1999: A sprint car spun out of control and struck and killed a 37-year-old spectator at Grays Harbor Raceway Park in Washington state.

July 2001: A 64-year-old woman died when race cars ran off a small track in Ohio and into the stands. Thirteen others were injured.

April 2003: An elderly couple was killed at a California speedway when a crash sent one car into the stands.

August 2005: Two people died when a stock car tumbled over a concrete wall at an Illinois raceway. The wreck injured five others.

March 2007: A race car struck a barrier before hitting and killing a 25-year-old spectator in Pennsylvania.

August 2008: A tire and part of an axle broke loose and struck and killed a 43-year-old woman at a Georgia speedway.

August 2012: Lightning killed a 41-year-old man at a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania.
