Mary Hunter Hackney Brame

Published: February 26, 2013

Mary Hunter Hackney Brame, 88, of Wilson & Kinston, died February 24, 2013, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born February 24, 1925 to the late John and Mary Hunter Hackney, she graduated from Salem College, married, and eventually settled down in Kinston where she taught music in the Kinston City Schools for 25 years. Along with her career in education, she played Church Organ for most of her adult life, as well as volunteering with multiple organizations advocating for the rights of handicapped and retarded citizens. Upon her retirement, she became a Meals on Wheels volunteer, leading the organization in Kinston for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of forty plus years, William F. Brame, Sr., her brother Ernest “Bo” Hackney, and her daughter-in-law, Janice Dail “Scotty” Brame.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons, William (Will) Brame, and wife Brenda, of East Stroudsburg PA, Richen (Dick) Brame and wife Joanne, of Wilmington, Ernest (Ernie) Brame and wife Lisa, of Kenly, and Charles (Charlie B) of Kinston, brother, John Hackney, of Wilson, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mary Hunter was a devoted mother and wife, whose calm serenity touched many. She was an angel among us.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 2nd, 2pm, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, in Kinston. Visitation will be an hour before the service. A private burial will be at a later time.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the charity of one's choice.

Arrangements by Edwards Funeral Home, Kinston.
