Catherine Goodwin Strong

Catherine Elizabeth Goodwin Strong parted her earthly life on February 25, 2013 while receiving temporary rehabilitation and therapy at Rockingham Manor Nursing Home. While suffering in her final days from the complications of congestive heart failure, she was constantly receiving watch care and loving support from her many fellow church members from the First Baptist Church of Hamlet, from many other lifelong acquaintances and from various Family members.

Mrs. Strong was born near Healing Springs, South Carolina, on October 19, 1919, as the second child of Lester Lewis Goodwin and the late Pear McLendon Goodwin. Most of her upbringing was in the town of Cayce, South Carolina and she graduated from Brookland Cayce High School in 1938. On September 2, 1938 she married Willis Hubert Strong, also of Cayce, SC. Mr. Strong was an employee of the Seaboard Airline Railroad Company. In the aftermath of the nationwide railroad strike of 1946, Willis and Catherine Strong relocated to Hamlet, N.C. the following year for Mr. Strong to resume his career with the Seaboard Airline Railroad Company. Mr. Strong retired in 1978 and passed away on November 15, 1984.He was buried in Richmond Memorial Park, Rockingham N.C. Catherine Strong was employed by Hamlet Industries beginning in 1955 and she remained with this employer as it relocated to become Rockingham Industries and later Mount Gilead Industries of Rockingham. She retired in 1982. She has been an active member of Hamlet First Baptist Church since 1964.

Mrs. Strong is survived by one sister, Benny Joyce Goodwin Senese, who resides in Surfside Beach, South Carolina. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Hubert Reese of Cayce, South Carolina and by a sister-in-law, Thea Mae Goodwin also of Cayce, South Carolina. She is survived by three sons, Willis Hubert Strong, Jr. and wife, Svea of Rockingham, Larry James Strong and wife, Sue of Cary, NC and Marvin Patrick Strong and wife Patricia of Raleigh, NC and by six grandchildren, Russell Strong and wife Sherry of Troy, NC, Karen Strong Allen and husband Meto of Rockingham, NC , Parke Strong and wife Kelly of Connelly Springs, NC, Ryan Strong of Hickory, NC , Natalie Strong Hoyle and husband Michael of Raleigh, NC, and Allison Strong of San Francisco, California. Mrs. Strong is also survived by 13 great-grand children; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by five step-grandaughters, Carol Petrea and husband James of Youngsville, NC; Ruth Moyer and husband, Phil of Murietta, California, Kelly Foglia and husband Paul of Raleigh NC; Paige Swan and husband Kevin of Holly Springs, NC, and April Power and husband Phil of Garner, NC; and by 16 step great-grandchildren.

The Reverend Randy Bishop will officiate Mrs. Strong’s service on Friday March 1, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Hamlet.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at the Church. Burial will proceed at Richmond Memorial Park upon completion of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the First Baptist Church of Hamlet’s General Fund, 200 Charlotte Street, Hamlet, NC 28345.

Harrington Funeral Home and Crematory, Hamlet, is serving the family of Mrs. Strong.
