CHARLOTTE — Livingstone coach James Stinson Jr. doesnt consider his Blue Bears to be a 3-point shooting threat.
Stinson may rethink that after Livingstones dominating 95-70 victory against St. Augustines on Thursday at Time Warner Cable Arena in the quarterfinals of the CIAA Tournament.
The Blue Bears (21-5) a 32.5 percent shooting team from 3-point range this season hit a season-best 11 of 16 3-pointers against the Falcons (16-12), including a 9-of-11 run in the first half that helped Livingstone build a 15-point lead.
Our game plan isnt to bombard people with 3s, Stinson said. Thats not going to win this tournament. We have to establish our inside presence ... but it still surprised me that we shot it so well in this arena.
The Blue Bears, the South Divisions No. 1 seed, advanced to the semifinals for the second time in the past three years and the third time overall. They will play Elizabeth City State (17-10) a 65-63 quarterfinal winner against Johnson C. Smith in the semifinals Friday.
Also advancing were defending tournament champion Winston-Salem State and Bowie State. The Rams (21-5) beat Virginia Union 84-74, while the Bulldogs (14-13) battled to a 67-60 victory against Lincoln (Pa.)
Mark Thomas scored a game-high 25 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers, with teammate Jody Hill adding 18 points and making 4 of 6 3s for Livingstone. Ethan Anderson had 14 points and Tyler Johnson 13 points and six assists.
They hit some really big 3s right off the bat, St. Augustines coach Lonnie Blow Jr. said. They made some tough shots. Some of them we were there to contest, and they still made them.
When youre shooting like that, it kinda opens things up for the rest of your offense. Thats what happened to us.
The Blue Bears also showed off their defense, forcing the Falcons into 25 turnovers, leading to a 37-8 advantage in points off turnovers. They also held St. Augustines to 37.3 percent (25 of 67) from the field and 8 of 24 on 3-pointers.
