CHAPEL HILL — Oxford Webb dominated the second half in a 57-41 boys basketball victory against Chapel Hill on Friday night.
Chapel Hill (24-5) had won two of three previous games this season against the Isaiah Hicks-led Warriors, including the Carolina Six 3A Conference tournament championship game last week.
Webb (24-5) advanced to next week’s N.C. High School Athletic Association quarterfinals in the 3A Eastern Regional in Fayetteville. A drawing will determine the pairings.
Rocky Mount (25-2) beat Pikeville Aycock 72-43 and Eastern Alamance (25-5) topped Fayetteville Westover 86-84 in overtime to earn berths. The winner of the game between West Craven and Havelock also will advance.
Chapel Hill led Webb 17-10 at the end of the first period and expanded the lead to 21-10, but Webb came back before a capacity crowd at Chapel Hill where hundreds of spectators were turned away.
Webb cut the Tigers’ lead to 27-24 by halftime.
The Warriors led 36-34 entering the fourth quarter, but they buried the regular-season champions rapidly. Webb’s lead climbed to 43-36 and with 2 minutes, 1 second remaining they led 57-39.
