Emily DeMaioNewton of Raleigh was named the 2013 Wake County Poetry Out Loud champion.

Emily, a junior at Wakefield High School, recited “More Lies” by Karin Gotsball and "The Affliction of Richard" by Robert Bridges at the district competition in January. She will compete in the state Poetry Out Loud competition in Greensboro later this month.

Poetry Out Loud, a national contest supported by the N.C. Arts Council with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, advocates learning about poetry and encourages public speaking skills.

Emily is the daughter of Dan and Sandy DeMaioNewton.
