Pliskova beats Mattek-Sands for first WTA title

Published: March 3, 2013

Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic rallied past American Bethanie Mattek-Sands in Sunday's final at the Malaysian Open.

Pliskova took down Bethanie Mattek-Sands by a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 margin to capture her first career WTA singles title. There was a rain delay in the third set.

Mattek-Sands, meanwhile, was playing in her fourth career WTA title match. She has yet to win, though, also falling in finals at Quebec City in 2008 and 2010 before also losing in the 2011 Hobart title match.

The 27-year-old Minnesota native was a top-30 player before injuries began to mount. She has dropped to 197th in the world.

Pliskova collected $40,000 for the victory.
