The Feb 27 column on offshore drilling by Rick Martinez (“Offshore drilling? Do it for the poor”) demonstrates his lack of knowledge of the subjects presented. He seems to think that electricity generated in a state stops at the border, creating an abundance or a lack of sufficient power within that state. Apparently he understands neither electric power generation and distribution nor the function of the national power grid.
The amount of fossil-fueled power generated within a state as an indicator of employment within that state has no scientific basis. He states that not a BTU of power is generated by resources within N.C.; apparently he is either unaware of the hydroelectric and solar power generated or he does not understand what a British Thermal Unit is.
His final comment of “drill, baby, drill” demonstrates exactly where and with whom he stands.
