A new Elon University Poll found that 88 percent of North Carolinians oppose using state money for renovating Bank of America Stadium.

The telephone poll was conducted during the last four days of February, and questioned 891 people.

“Although arguments have been made that the 17-year-old stadium has helped bring in revenue to the local and state economy, 88 percent opposed a state subsidy for the renovations, a view that held steady regardless of race, gender, age or party identification,” according to a release by the pollsters.

The Carolina Panthers have asked the state for $62.5 million toward a planned $250 million stadium renovation.

On Monday, Gov. Pat McCrory said no state money would be available for the team’s renovation efforts – a move that complicates the team’s bid for public money to help upgrade the stadium.

“We don’t have the money in the state to address that issue,” McCrory told the Observer Monday. “I have never been actually asked for the $62 million, nor do we have it.”
