NC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

— Simultaneous wrecks near each other on westboundInterstate 40 sent fire department and EMS units scrambling in the dark Friday morning on the highway between N.C. 54 and Wade Avenue.

The state Department of Transportation alerted drivers to two accidents, listing both as being at mile marker 289 and that two of three traffic lanes and the right shoulder were closed.

Initial reports from the scenes indicated there were no life-threatening injuries, but EMS units transported at least one person to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

The accidents were reported shortly before 6 a.m., and it took workers a short time to determine how many accident scenes they had to secure.

Initial reports varied from one to three crashes as the dark made it difficult for arriving firefighters to be sure what had happened.
