NPs benefit doctors
The March 10 article on nurse practitioners (“More training, bigger roles for N.C. nurse practitioners”) was helpful to educate people of the role of nurse practitioners.
However, it gave voice to a group calling itself the N.C. Coalition to Protect Patients. This group is populated by doctors who are afraid of losing some business. They have no evidence to support the idea that NPs are in any way a threat to a patient’s health and safety. In fact, research has shown that NPs have safer outcomes and greater patient satisfaction than MDs across many specialties.
This group needs to provide proof instead of innuendo and a glossy website. Many doctors profit off the backs of NPs who deliver superb care with minimal “supervision.”
