Grace Vaughn Furman

Mrs. Grace Vaughn Lane Furman, 105, of Springmoor Retirement Community, Raleigh, died on the afternoon of March 14, 2013, having had her hair and nails done in the morning. She was born January 26, 1928 to the late Smilie and Roxanna Lewis Vaughn. A native of Darlington, SC, she was a graduate of St. John’s High School and Winthrop University in 1929. In the fall of ’29 she came to Raleigh to work at the NC School for the Blind as a secretary to the superintendent, and from 1930 to 1941 as Bookkeeper-Steward. From 1943 to 1949 she worked at the NC Dept. of Agriculture. In 1949, she became Secretary to the Director and to the NC Board of Conservation and Development, later serving as Assistant to the Director. After retiring in 1953 from full-time work, she worked part-time in the Dept. of Administration. She worked in several political campaigns and from November 1954 to April 1955 she worked in Washington, DC, in the office of US Senator W. Kerr Scott. In 1973, Governor Robert W. Scott appointed her to the NC Board of Conservation and Development.

In 1934, she married James Jonathan Lane. He died in 1948. In 1955, she married Allen M. Furman. They enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing until the last year of Allen’s life. Allen died January 13, 1998. Both Johnny and Allen served in WWII.

Mrs. Furman was a former Director of the NC travel Council, a member of the Raleigh Woman’s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, and several professional organizations. She was a member of Pullen Memorial Baptist Church since 1934.

Mr. and Mrs. Furman were “Springmoor Pioneers”, having been among the very first residents to move in when Springmoor opened in August 1984. Grace enjoyed many happy years there with Allen and with many good friends until the end of her life. She was one of the last three surviving “pioneers” of Springmoor.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Grace was predeceased by a sister Hascal Lee Vaughn Stewart.

Mrs. Furman is survived by a sister in law, Mrs. Jo Lane(Frank) Wheeler, of Escalon, CA; nieces and nephews, Mr. & Mrs. Ronald (Eileen) Schwartz, of Raleigh, Mr. & Mrs. Bill (Geri) Rosa, and Mr. Larry (Barbara) Stein, of Bedford, NY; great nieces and nephews, Meryle Schwartz and Cheryl Mesimore, Amy and Leonard Bush, and Stuart and Ellen Schwartz; and cousins in NC, SC, NY, and CA. She was loved and supported by her special friends Mary Anne and Mark Schiller, of Chocowinity, NC and Dot and Henry Addison, of Raleigh, and she wished to express her great appreciation to them as well as her caregivers at Springmoor for their help, friendship, and love.

A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, Mary 21, 2013 at 3:00pm in the auditorium at Springmoor, 1500 Sawmill Rd., Raleigh, NC 27615. Rev. Phyllis Mayo (Springmoor Chaplain) and Rev. Nancy Petty (Pullen Memorial Baptist Church) will officiate.
