Eric Richard Schumann

March 19, 2013

Eric Richard Schumann, 55, of Cary, formerly of Waterloo Village, NJ, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2013, at his home in Cary.

Eric was born in 1957 in Newton, NJ, to the late Frederick John Schumann and Irma Ann Nagy Schumann. He was a graduate of the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, NJ, and attended Case Western Reserve University. Eric was a 6-year veteran of the US Navy, where he served on Guam for almost 4 years as an electronics technician. After leaving the Navy, Eric earned his BSEE degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering and then his Masters in Electrical Engineering from Penn State University, with a major in antenna technology and electromagnetic compatibility. Eric then worked for a company in Connecticut prior to joining IBM and relocating to the Triangle area in 1996. He was employed with IBM for over 17 years.

Eric enjoyed being physically active and being out in nature—hiking and biking were his favorites. He loved the Jersey shore and the Wrightsville Beach area and grew to also love the mountains, especially the area around Blowing Rock, NC. Eric had a huge network of friends, family, and colleagues and had a great love for animals, especially bunnies and cats. Three weeks prior to his death, he lost his beloved cat, Pepper.

Eric was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick John Schumann and Irma Ann Nagy Schumann, and his beloved Aunt "Sis" Lillian E. Schumann.

He is survived by his companion, Virginia “Ginny” Fox of Durham, NC; sister, Anne Schumann of Manhattan, NY; brothers, Jack Schumann and wife, Mary Beth of Mountain Lakes, NJ, and Frederick Joseph Schumann and wife, Cindy of Roxbury, NJ; and many nieces; nephews; and countless friends.

The family will receive friends 7:30-9:30 pm on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511. A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 pm at the Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4907 Garrett Rd, Durham, NC 27707.
