One charged in shooting at edge of Shaw University campus

— A 19-year-old man from Virginia who told police he is a student at Shaw University was charged Thursday morning with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with a shooting on a street next to the campus.

Darrin Troy Baker of 11708 Sawgrass Lane in Fredericksburg, Va., was arrested in the 800 block of South Person Street, police said.

The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at South Person and Worth streets, police said.

The person who was shot was hit in the leg and had no life-threatening injuries, they said.

South Person Street borders the Shaw campus on the east.

Worth Street meets South Person Street across from a parking lot next to the Men’s Dormitory Building.
