A list of 13 late nominees to the 139th Kentucky Derby is headed by recent prep winner Black Onyx. The 13 new nominations brings to 382 the total number of 3-year-olds eligible for the Run for the Roses on May 4.
Black Onyx, owned by Sterling Racing, won Saturday's $550,000 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park. Trained by Kelly Breen, the colt garnered 50 points toward starting in the Kentucky Derby.
"If he won the Spiral, his next start would be the Derby. He's not nominated now, but he will be, in about 15 minutes," Breen exclaimed immediately after Saturday's win.
Joining Black Onyx as a late nominee are Are You Kidding Me, Brazilian Court, Departing, Erik the Red, Giant Finish, Hip Four Sixtynine, Infinite Magic, Narvaez, Storm Fighter, Sunbean, Undrafted and Wings of Fortune.
Late nominations carried a $6,000 fee and closed Saturday.
