Kevin C. Foy: Invest in public transit

Invest in public transit

I disagree with a letter to the editor calling Chapel Hill transit’s use of federal taxes to pay 83 percent of the cost of new buses a bad use of money (“Bad use of funds” March 22).

According to the Federal Highway Administration, federal taxes pay 80 percent of the cost of road construction in North Carolina and every other state. So buses are not given special treatment. Our transportation network is an enormous economic driver in this country, and it is wise policy for us to invest in it, especially in the growing Triangle region. The more alternatives we have for moving around, the better – every driver on I-40 knows that.

I hope Chapel Hill and all the towns in the area continue to build public transportation systems for the good of us all.
