David S. Heesacker: Cue the parade

Cue the parade

Perhaps the combination of a Republican-dominated state government and the recent death of Hugo Chavez has pushed Gene Nichol off the edge.

The legislature is trying to put North Carolina’s financial house in order, and Nichol in his March 21 Point of View piece invites us to join him in the streets. He rationalizes how our duly elected leadership came to be and implies that North Carolinians are too bigoted and stupid to cast an informed vote on our own.

Like your editorial page, his opinions are predictable with the concept of individual responsibility evidently unfathomable. Nichol’s rant insinuates a solution of more government spending while ignoring the failures of the past fiscally irresponsible Democratic regimes. Less taxpayer money to spend is indeed maddening to him. We should take to the streets – to celebrate.
