Matchup to Watch

Carmelo Anthony vs. a variety of defenders: A variety of injuries leave the Knicks short-handed and out-of-position. But Anthony, one of the biggest matchup problems in the NBA can cover up for a lot of flaws.

Observations

• The Knicks looked in jeopardy of losing the Atlantic Division title with four straight losses, but they righted themselves with five victories in a row.

• The Knicks have won four in a row over the Bobcats, but the all-time series is still surprisingly close at 17-13 in favor of New York.

• Kenyon Martin, back from China to sign with the Knicks, still can put up the occasional big game; he was good for 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, plus seven rebounds, in 27 minutes recently.

Tap-ins

• This is the Bobcats’ only trip to Madison Square Garden this season. Bobcats coach Mike Dunlap coached there frequently last season as St. John’s acting head coach, while Steve Lavin recovered from cancer treatment.

• Bobcats rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist played just two minutes in the second half of Wednesday’s comeback victory over the Orlando Magic.

Did you know?

It doesn’t take long to tell whether Anthony is going to have a big night; he leads the NBA in first-quarter scoring, averaging 8.7 points. Rick Bonnell
