The N&O All-Metro swimming team for 2012-13

State record holders Hannah Moore of Green Hope High and Colin Ellington of Holly Springs lead The News & Observer’s 2013 all-Metro High School Swimming team.

Ellington set the NCHSAA record in winning the 100 freestyle and also won the 200 free. Moore set the girls 100 backstroke record and won the 500 free.

Ellington was the most outstanding swimmer in the 4A championships. Raleigh Charter’s Olivia Ontjes, who set the NCHSAA 1A/2A record in the 100 free and also won the 100 breaststroke, and Cardinal Gibbons’ Bailey Maloney were the most outstanding swimmers in 1A/2A girls and 3A boys, respectively.

Green Hope, the 4A boys state champion and girls runner-up, has six swimmers on the team.

The swimmers were selected based on performances in regional and state competition.

The 15 boys and the 15 girls selected for the squad combined to win 22 individual championships and swam on 12 winning relays in the NCHSAA or the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association finals.

The Ravenscroft girls, Raleigh Charter girls, Green Hope boys, N.C. Science & Math boys and Cardinal Gibbons boys each won state team titles this year.

All-Metro Swimming, 2012-13

Girls

Haley Bishop, Panther Creek, So.: Was fourth in the 50 free and 100 fly and part of relay teams that finished second and third, respectively.

Carly Catella, Panther Creek, Jr..: Runner-up in 500 free, fourth in 200 free, on a third-place relay team.

Claire DeSelm, Chapel Hill, Fr..: Medaled four times for the 3A state runner-up Tigers. Was third in 200 IM and 100 fly.

Annabelle Durham, Chapel Hill, So.: Was third in 100 back, fourth in 200 free, and on second- and third-place relays.

Margaret Ireland, Raleigh Charter, Jr.: Was 1A/2A champ in 200 IM and runner-up in 100 backstroke. Was also on two winning relay teams.

Claire Liu, Panther Creek, Sr.: Was fourth in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 back and was on relays that were second and third.

Chloe Minkles, Ravenscroft, Fr.: Won the NCISAA f50 and 100 free and led two winning relays for NCISAA 3A champs.

Hannah Moore, Green Hope, Jr.: Set the NCHSAA record in the 100 back and also won the 500 free. Swam on first and second-place relays.

Jenny Nusbaum, Green Hope, Fr.: Helped Green Hope win one relay and finish second in two others.

Olivia Ontjes, Raleigh Charter, So.: Set 1A/2A record in 100 free win and won the 100 breast. Name MVP of the 1A/2A state meet after helping Phoenix to two relay wins.

Megan Owens, Cary, Jr.: 4A champion in the 100 fly and swam on third-place relay.

Bailey Revels, Northwood, So.: Second in the 1A/2A diving competition.

Brooke Rubendall, Green Hope, Fr.: Runner-up in 200 free, , third in the 200 individual medley and on two runner-up relays.

Emily Surratt, Durham Trinity, Jr.: Won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke in 1A/2A and had a leg on two winning relays.

Victoria Tschoke, Apex, Sr.: Liberty recruit was runner-up in the 100 back and 200 IM at the 4A meet.

Boys

Tom Bilden, Carrboro, So.: 1A/2A state champ in the 100 fly and 400 free relay, runner-up in the 500 free and 200 medley relay.

Ryan Cade, Green Hope, Sr.: LSU recruit was third in the 100 breast and 200 IM and was on a winning relay.

Colin Ellington, Holly Springs, Jr.: The 4A MVP set a new state record in the 100 free and won the 200 IM.

Anthony Gallante, Athens Drive, Sr.: Gallante won 4A East region diving, but a foot injury made him miss the state title.

Jonathan Glavich, Green Hope, Fr.: Accumulated the most points for the 4A champs, medaling in two relays, the 200 free and 100 fly.

Jamison Hauser, Panther Creek, So.: Won the 4A state title in the 500 free.

Matt Jacobs, Durham School of the Arts, Jr.: Was the 1A/2A champ in the 100 breast.

Scott Johnson, Leesville Road, Sr.: N.C. State recruit was second in the 50 free, third in 100 free. Was also on a 4A runner-up relay team.

Adam Linker, Cary Academy, Sr.: N.C. State recruit won the 500 free at the NCISAA 3A state meet.

Bailey Maloney, Cardinal Gibbons, Sr.: East Carolina recruit was 3A MVP after winning the 50 and 100 and swimming on two winning relays.

Justin Morrell, Carrboro, Sr.: Was runner-up three times in the 1A/2A state meet and first on a relay.

Koya Osada, East Chapel Hill, Jr.: Was second in the 4A 100 back, 200 IM and helped 200 medley relay finish fourth.

Tad Spence, Green Hope, Sr.: Was fourth in the 100 back and helped Falcons’ relay teams finish first and third.

Jacob Vosburgh, N.C. Science & Math, Jr.: Won the 200 free and 500 free in the 1A/2A meet and was on first place and runner-up relay teams.

Kai Wombacher Cardinal Gibbons, Sr.: Brown recruit won the 200 fresstyle, was second in 500 free, and part of two winning relays for the 3A champs.
